In the Darkness We Shine

April 20, 2020

My weightless peeps,

While every entrepreneur out there has taken this dubious opportunity to convince you why you need their special sauce now more than ever due to the fiercest pandemic in a century, yours truly has been silent.

I’ve been silent because I know a thing or two about solitude, forced via quarantine or self-elected, that I want to share with you over the next two weeks. And it starts with a buzz.

We’re busy, you and I. Chasing. Sprinting after ‘the good,’ or ignoring its opposite. And it’s worked, for the most part. It’s worked the way diets work. The way workouts work. The way jobs pay the bills and family is, you know… family. You know, it’s worked.

It’s worked until the greatest health and financial crisis in 100 years landed at your front door, and then, all of a sudden, things didn’t seem to be working quite the same way.

All those things that worked looked just like freedom… until.

There’s a bee buzzing against my window pane as I write this. He’s been at it a good half hour. He’ll likely take a break soon, and I imagine he’ll be right back at it until he burns out and needs a spa treatment. Why?

Because it looks like freedom out there, only he can’t reach it.

But maybe if he just keeps going, buzzing, fighting against that invisible barrier instead of slowing the fuck down to question it all he’d see the open door literally a meter away from him. But he won’t. Why?

Because all the other bees are out there, and they’re buzzing. He sees them out there, busy and free. And if he stops buzzing, he may not catch up.

After another half hour of effort his confidence will wane. He'll realize darkness is coming, and he'll start buzzing more feverishly, because freedom is literally right there.

He feels anxious.

Scared.
Alone.

And it will get worse, as he tires from the struggle and the sun starts to set. As darkness takes over. But that is where his little story gets interesting. It’s where yours gets interesting too.

Because when the sun sets it doesn’t look like freedom out there anymore. It looks like nothing.

It’s quiet. It’s confusing. And there’s no more reason to fight that invisible force that looks like something it isn’t.

There are no options left. It’s time to be still. It's time to face the darkness.

Therein lies a power that can’t be bought or buzzed for. It’s the power to see. For the darkness, while it brings every fear and anxiety possible to the surface, it also removes the illusion of freedom through the window, and without that, you’re free to find the open door.

The world won’t be the same after all this, but it will recover. Dawn WILL come. And in this precious time of darkness we must decide whether to continue to fight for what looks like freedom outside, or discover it within.

I invite you to consider Weightlessness. It’s been my open door. It can be yours too.
